The 90th Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Hollywood this weekend and we’ve picked out our top Oscars betting predictions.
Many of the categories are regarded as a foregone conclusion, with Gary Oldman rated a banker to be named best actor and Frances McDormand long odds-on for the leading actress gong.
However, there are still some open markets and we’ve got three selections that could give us a 5/1 treble if all take home their respective trophies.
Best Motion Picture: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri @ 7/10
Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy cleaned up at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs and can complete the holy trinity of accolades. McDormand is superb as a mother trying to highlight the lack of progress in a police investigation into her teenage daughter’s murder. Both the quality and the subject matter make this a topical tip in light of the high-profile Me Too movement. It also doesn’t hurt that second favourite The Shape Of Water is the subject of a copyright lawsuit.
Best Visual Effects: Blade Runner 2049 @ 67/100
Ridley Scott’s original movie missed out when nominated for this category back in 1982, but there was no shame in being pipped at the post by E.T. Ryan Gosling stars in the critically-acclaimed sequel, with Harrison Ford back as Rick Deckard, but it is again the visual effects which have earned most praise, including victory at the BAFTAs for the team of Richard R Hoover, Paul Lambert, Gerd Nefzer and John Nelson.
Best Original Screenplay: Get Out @ 11/10
Three Billboards is again one of the front runners for this award but American horror film Get Out is fancied to come out on top this time. When a film costs just $4.5million to make and ends up grossing $255million at the box office worldwide, you can bet there’s a great story behind it. The social critique side of the plot is timely, with Jordan Peele telling Oprah Winfrey of his movie: “This was a way for, I think, a lot of white people to experience the world through the black perspective.”
